This Sakhi is written in ‘Sikhan Di Bhagat Mala’, an eighteenth century text originating from the Giani Sampardha of Bhai Mani Singh Ji Shaheed. This text contains Sakhis of the Sikhs of Guru Nanak Dev Ji – Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji as recounted by Bhai Mani Singh Ji Shaheed to the Sangat, based on the names of Sikhs in Bhai Gurdas Ji’s 11th Vaar. In the following Sakhi, Guru Angad Dev Ji teaches their Sikh to remain in the Hukam of Vaheguru:
‘Bhai Jiva Ji was the sevadar (laangri – cook) of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji. Guru Ji had a very simple diet of Khichrri (a mixture of rice and lentils) and yoghurt. Bhai Jiva Ji would prepare this daily and bring it for Guru Ji’s daily meal. One day Bhai Jiva Ji requested Guru Ji, “O Garib Niwaj! (Patron of the poor), There is a great storm coming, which could delay me in bringing the daily Langar to your presence. Guru Ji, you are all-powerful, please stop this storm so I can complete this Seva without any obstacle.” Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji said, “Bhai Jiva Ji! It is only due to these strong winds that many ships can travel further on their journeys. It is only due to the rains from this storm that many living creatures get water to survive, such as snakes living in copper mines (very dry lands which are constantly burning in the heat of the sun and where there is no provision of water). If our Langar is delayed for 4 gharris (1 gharri is 24 minutes, making this 1 hour 36 minutes), this is not an issue, but we should not interfere in Vaheguru Ji’s plan, a Sikh must stay in the Rajaa (divine will) of Vaheguru. The bhagats (saints) are like the devoted wives who stay content in the will of their Husband (Vaheguru). Bhai Jiva! Stay content in Vaheguru Ji’s divine play, it is only then that you shall truly receive the rewards of your Seva.” In this manner, Bhai Jiva Ji was liberated by accepting the divine will of Vaheguru.’
Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji gave this divine wisdom to his Sikh Bhai Jiva Ji, that we can never understand the infinite play of Vaheguru. Many times we may be faced by certain obstacles which we can take negatively, but we do not know in what way that Hukam may positively shape our future, or from which bigger calamity Vaheguru has saved us from. Sometimes that which may seem unfair or an inconvenience to us could be the same thing from which many receive life. Guru Ji showed Bhai Jiva Ji how Vaheguru takes care of their whole creation, and a Sikh must live in complete acceptance of Vaheguru Ji’s Hukam.
The Sakhi in Gurmukhi is as follows:
