Sakhi: Sri Guru Amar Das Ji's final Updesh - Translation from Sri Gurmukh Parkash

The following Sakhi written by Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji in Sri Gurmukh Parkash describes the final updesh (teachings) of Guru Sahib to Baba Mohari Ji and the Saadhsangat. Sant Ji has summarised the Ramkali Sadh Baani, written by Baba Sundar Ji (great-grandson of Guru Amardas Ji), who described the events of Guru Ji's Jothi Joth to Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Guru Ji included this Baani in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Raag Ramkali, Ang 924.

Baba Mohari Ji (the son of Guru Amardas Ji) asked, "O Giver of Happiness, Guru Ji! Please tell us what ceremonies we should complete after your Jothi Joth?"

Sri Guru Amardas Ji replied,* "Sing the praises of Vaheguru, recite the Naam of Hari, Keshav (names of Vaheguru) constantly, this is the practice of pind (this was a common practice after funerals to distribute Pinnis of rice/oat flour for ten days after death. Guru Ji said reciting and inspiring others to Jap Naam, this is the real distribution of 'pind'). *Note: Here Sant Ji is summarising the 'Ramkali Sadh' of Baba Sundar Ji.

The Naam of Gopal (Vaheguru) is the leaf (tulsi leaves were often placed on the body), the Sangat of the Gurmukhs is the calling of the Pandits.

The Ganges (where ashes would usually be immersed after cremation) is the Saadhsangat, immersing in the Saadhsangat and obtaining Vaheguru, this is the practice of 'Phul Paune' (immersing ashes) that you are to follow!

Being coloured in Vaheguru's love is the only 'Bibaan' (funeral hearse) that will please me. Reciting 'Har, Har' is the true Katha of the Purans (i.e. Pandits would provide the commentary of the Purans for 10 days after death, Guru Ji said the remembrance of Vaheguru is the true Katha that is to be performed).

The Diva (keeping an oil lamp lit for 360 days after the death in the belief that that will light the path of the deceased) is to recite the Naam of Vaheguru. These are the ceremonies which are to be followed! Singing the praises of Vaheguru is the true pilgrimage to the Ganges (usually where the ashes were immersed after cremation)."

After blessing Baba Mohari Ji with the gift of Naam, Guru Ji completed their updesh saying:

"Do not cry and lament! I shall merge with my true form (Nirgun - formless Vaheguru), do not have an iota of doubt about this."

On the banks of river Beas, Guru Ji created the town of Goindval. Here, the true King Satguru Amardas Ji destroyed all illnesses and death (it is recorded in Itihaas that death did not come near Goindval while Guru Ji was present in physical form).

Who has the power to count the amount of Sikhs Guru Ji liberated? In fact, Guru Ji selflessly liberated the whole world!

On the full moon of Bhadron, Guru Amardas Ji, whose glory cannot be put into words, merged with their true form (Nirgun Akaal Purakh).
