This Sakhi from Gurbilas Patshahi 6 illustrates how Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji taught the Sikhs how vital the Satkaar of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is:
Baba Budha Ji asked Guru Arjan Dev Ji, "O Guru Ji, please hear my request! Where should Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji be placed to rest at night? Please tell us and eradicate our doubts."
Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji said, "Listen to the Maryada carefully. This Darbar of the Guru is everlasting, and the Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the very form of Vaheguru"
"When one and a half pehar of night has passed, read Sohila Sahib with full concentration. Now listen attentively about where to place Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji to rest at night"
"With the permission of Vaheguru, I had created a Kothri (small room) as my residence.* That Kothri shall now be the residence of Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji. After placing Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the following Maryada must be followed." (*NOTE: This room is known as 'Sri Kotha Sahib' and it is where Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji would reside during the construction of Sri Amritsar Sarovar and Sri Harmandir Sahib. It is now situated inside Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib. After saying these words, Guru Ji described the complete Maryada which should be observed from morning to night inside Sri Harmandir Sahib. We will share those details in another post.)
When one and a half pehar of night had passed, Kirtan Sohila Sahib was read (as Sukhasan was performed). Baba Budha Sahib Ji performed Ardaas and placed Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji upon his head with reverence.
Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji elegantly waved the Chaur Sahib over Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji as they walked towards Kothri Sahib. The splendorous sounds of the conch shells resounded all around.
Once they crossed the bridge of Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji and reached Sri Kothri Sahib, Guru Ji taught the Sikhs the utmost respect that must be given to Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji:
Guru Ji then called for a new palangh (bed) to be placed in Kothri Sahib for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Guru Ji placed new bedding and sheets on the bed with love, and then placed Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji on the bed to rest.
Guru Ji themselves would lay down on the floor besides Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's bed to rest daily. Guru Ji would supplicate in front of Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib Ji, recognising them as the very form of Vaheguru.
