The following Sakhi from Guru Sahib Ji's life, written by Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji in Sri Gurmukh Parkash describes Guru Ji's beautiful recitation of Gurbani:
ਬੰਨੋ ਬੀੜ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈਂ ਕਬ ਬਾਣੀ ਲਿਖ ਰਰੈਂ, ਕਬਹੂੰ ਕੀਰਤ ਕਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਿਝਾਵਈ। Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji would read Gurbani from Bhai Banno Ji's Saroop, and at times they would write Pothis of Gurbani. At other times they would sing Keertan on their Siranda, sending the Sangat into a state of bliss.
ਆਯੂ ਹੈ ਛੋਟੀ ਤਬ ਪੰਚ ਸਾਲ ਸਰਬ ਹੀ, ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਿਦੇ ਉਮਗਾਵਹੀ। Guru Ji's age was only 5 years at this time, their heart would always be full of love for Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji, ever longing for their darshan.
ਸਿਖ ਇਕ ਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸ ਤਬ, ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਸੁਤ ਵੱਡੇ ਪਤਾ ਲਗ ਜਾਵਹੀ। A Sikh once came to Sri Guru Har Rai Ji, recognising that Ramrai Ji was the elder son of Guru Ji.
ਕੌਨ ਗੁਰਿਆਈ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੋਇ ਸੁਤ ਇਕ ਜੈਸੇ, ਹੋਵੇ ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਯਾ ਤਾਂ ਪਤਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਆਵਹੀ॥੧੧॥ The Sikh also recognised that Guru Ji's younger son (Guru Harkrishan Ji) had many great qualities as well, and wondered who would sit upon the Gurgadhi after Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji. He asked Guru Ji if they could alleviate this doubt from his mind.
ਸੁਣ ਗੁਰ ਕਹਾ ਸੂਈ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰ ਸਿਖ, ਜਹਾਂ ਨਿਤਨੇਮ ਕਰੈ ਤਹਾਂ ਚਲ ਜਾਈਐ। Hearing this, Guru Ji said to the Sikh, "Take a needle and go to where both my sons (Baba Ramrai Ji & Guru Harkrishan Ji) are sitting on Manjis (wooden stools) and doing their Nitnem.
ਮੰਜੀ ਕੇ ਪਾਵੇ ਸਾਥ ਲਾਵਣੀ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਇ ਸਾਥ, ਬੀਚ ਧਸੇ ਢਲੈ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਠਹਿਰਾਈਐ। With the needle, pierce each of the wooden legs of their stools. The Sahibzaada sitting upon that Manji in which the needle passes through, will be the next Guru."
ਸੁਣ ਗੁਰਵਾਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਗਿਆ ਜਹਾਂ ਰਾਮਰਾਇ, ਪਠਤਿ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਸੁਰ ਨਿਰਮਾਈਐ। Abiding by Guru Ji's words the Sikh went to Baba Ramrai Ji, who was reading Gurbani in a very sweet voice.
ਬਾਣੀ ਕੁਝ ਸੁਣੀ ਸੂਈ ਪਾਵੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਬ ਲਾਈ, ਦੇਖਿਆ ਕਠੋਰ ਨਹਿ ਵਿਚ ਗਡਵਾਈਐ॥੧੨॥ The Sikh sat and listened to Gurbani. When he tried to insert the needle into the wooden legs of Ramrai Ji's stool, the wood was too hard for the needle to pass through.
ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਰਖ ਰਾਮਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਹੋਇ ਗਈ, ਆਇਆ ਸੀ ਤਹਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਜੀ ਰਾਜਈ। After the test of Ramrai Ji was over, the Sikh went to where Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji was sitting reading Gurbani.
ਪਾਠ ਬੈਠ ਸੁਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਪੰਘੂੜੇ ਕੋ ਲਾਇ ਸੂਈ, ਮੋਮ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਧਸ ਗਈ ਪੇਖ ਕੇ ਬਿਰਾਜਈ। While listening to Guru Ji recite Gurbani, the Sikh took out the needle to press into the wooden leg of the stool on which Guru Ji was sitting. The needle passed through with ease as if it had passed through a soft material.
ਐਸਾ ਮਨ ਦ੍ਰਵਿਆ ਹੈ ਮੰਜੀ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਪਾਵੇ ਢਲੇ, ਸੂਈ ਮੋਮ ਵਿਚ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਲੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਜਈ। Such was the effect of Guru Ji's recitation of Gurbani (with pure love) that where the wood had turned soft, the minds of those hardened by Vikaar (vices) also turned soft with Prem for Vaheguru.
ਮੀਠੀ ਸੁਰ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਦ੍ਰਵਤਿ ਮਨ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਕਾ, ਕਰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਅਨੰਦ ਉਰ ਛਾਜਈ॥੧੩॥ Listening to the ambrosial voice of Guru Ji reciting Baani the Sikh's mind was filled with ultimate bliss, having found his answer he was elated.
