ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ॥ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫਤਹ ॥
In commemoration of the Shaheedi Dihaara of Shaheedan de Sirtaaj, Baani Ke Bohith Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj on Jeth Sudi 4, 1663 Bikrami (1605 CE), below are some verses about Satguru Ji’s Shaheedi translated from Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale’s poetic work ‘Sri Gurmukh Parkash’:
ਚੰਦੂ ਤਾਈ ਆਖ ਕਰ ਕੈਦ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਦਏ, ਉਬਲਦੀ ਦੇਗ਼ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੋਹਿਤੇ ॥ Jahangir said to Chandu, “Imprison him!" (Referring to Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji), Chandu obliged and imprisoned Guru Ji and their five Sikhs (Bhai Bidhi Chand Ji, Bhai Langah Ji, Bhai Pera Ji, Bhai Jetha Ji, Bhai Piraana Ji). Guru Sahib Ji was forced to sit inside a boiling cauldron of water, however, despite this, their beauty did not decrease.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਅਡੋਲ ਬੈਠੇ ਤਪਤ ਹੈ ਲੋਹਿ ਪਰ, ਅੱਗ ਹੇਠ ਬਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਲਾਟਾਂ ਨਿਕਲ ਕੇ। Satguru Ji sat on the burning iron plate without flinching; the intense fire beneath was emitting sparks.
ਚੰਦੂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਮਿਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੈ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਅਸ. ਮੰਨਤ ਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੋਈ ਬਾਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਭਾਲ ਕੇ। Chandu met with Jahangir and devised many ultimatums to give to Guru Ji, but Guru Ji was not going to accept any of them.
ਜਹਾਂਗੀਰ ਕਹਾ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛੀਏ ਜੇ ਮੰਨ ਜਾਏ, ਚੰਦੂ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ਆਏ ਆਂਖ ਕਰ ਲਾਲ ਕੇ। Jahangir instructed Chandu to try and convince Guru Ji, Chandu the sinner came to Guru Ji with his eyes full of rage.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਕ ਮੰਨੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਕਹੇ ਲੱਗ, ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਦੀ ਸਿਫਤ ਲਿਖਾਵੋ ਹੱਥ ਨਾਲ ਕੇ॥੪੫॥ Chandu said, “Accept the marriage proposal of my daughter to your son and accept the demands of the King. Do as he says and include verses praising Islam and the Prophet in the Sri Aadh Granth Sahib!” (Note: Chandu’s daughter’s rishta had come for Guru Hargobind Ji, but when the Sikh Sangat heard that Chandu was slandering Guru Ji, they requested Guru Ji not to accept the rishta. Guru Ji accepted the Sangat's request, which enraged Chandu.)
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਫਤ ਰਸੂਲ ਲਿਖੈ, ਜਹਾਂਗੀਰ ਸੰਦੀ ਨਾ ਲਿਖਾਵੈਂਗੇ ਤਰੀਕ ਕੋ। Satguru Ji said, “I cannot write the praises of the Prophet (as all Gurbani is Dhur Ki Baani – the revealed word of Vaheguru) and I cannot accept these demands of Jahangir.
ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੈਂ ਰਾਖੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਖੁਸਰੋ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਨ ਦੀਆ, ਛੱਤੀ ਨਹਿ ਦੈਹੈਂ ਜਾਨੋ ਸਾਡੀ ਤਹਿਕੀਕ ਕੋ। I am the protector of the poor, whoever comes to the Guru’s Darbar is treated equally, that is why we fed Khusro. I will not pay Jahangir’s fine, I say that with full faith! (Note: Khusro was the son of Jahangir, however, he rebelled against his father. While he was on the run from Jahangir’s forces, he passed Guru Ji’s Darbar to have langar and rest. As a result, Jahangir claimed Guru Ji was giving shelter to rebels and ordered them to pay a fine. Guru Ji refused to pay the fine, as they said anyone, whether a friend or foe, is treated equally in the pangat of the Guru.)
ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਵਣਾ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਕਹੈਂ, ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਸੰਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਸ ਈਕ ਕੋ। I shall not mix kach (unripe words) in the Baani, only the praise of the Naam, Guru, Sant and Sikh can be contained in Sri Aadh Guru Granth Sahib!
ਲੇਵਣਾ ਨਾ ਸਾਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੀਣਾ ਜਾਣ, ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੇਂ ਠੀਕ ਕੋ॥੪੬॥ I shall not take the marriage offer for my son (Sri Guru Hargobind Ji) which is devoid of love for the Guru, recognising the supplication of the Sangat is paramount!”
ਚੰਦੂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਪਾਸ ਜਾਇ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਸਭ, ਮਾਨਤ ਨਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਡਾਢੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰਖਾਂਵਦੇ। Chandu went to Jahangir and told him everything Guru Ji had said, he stated, “The Guru won’t listen to me regardless of what force I use!”
ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਕਹਾ ਕਰ ਇਨ ਕੋ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਤੁਮ, ਤੁਰਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਹ ਕਰੀ ਬਹੁ ਜਾਂਵਦੇ। The King said, “Martyr the Guru, due to his glory many turak (Mughals/Muslims) are turning into Sikhs.”
ਇਉਂ ਆਖ ਟੱਲ ਕੇ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਗਿਆ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ, ਚੰਦੂ ਦੋਖੀ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਹੈ ਆਖੇ ਤੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਵਦੇ। Saying this, Jahangir went to Kashmir and left Chandu to inflict torture upon Guru Sahib.
ਤਤੀ ਰੇਤ ਸੀਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਵੇ ਪਾਪੀ ਨੀਚ ਕਹਿ, ਤਤੀ ਲੋਹਿ ਉੱਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਸਣ ਲਗਾਂਵਦੇ॥੪੭॥ Burning sand was poured upon Guru Ji’s head by the orders of the sinner Chandu, Guru Ji was made to sit upon a burning iron plate.
After many tortures inflicted upon them, Guru Ji remained steadfast on their stand. Guru Ji would not accept the demands of the King and Chandu. Sant Ji now describes Guru Ji’s last moments before Shaheedi:
ਫੇਰ ਰਾਵੀ ਤੱਟ ਪਰ ਭੇਜੇ ਹੈਂ ਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹਿਤ, ਰੁੱਤ ਗਰਮਾਇਸ਼ ਪਵੇ ਧੁੱਪ ਬਿਨ ਮੇਪ ਕੋ। Guru Ji was sent to bathe in the cold water of the Raavi river. In the unbearable heat of June, the torturers thought this would cause Guru Ji more pain as their body was full of blisters and their skin was severely burnt. However, Guru Ji was preparing for their Shaheedi.
ਕੀਆ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖਨ ਕੋ ਧੀਰ ਦੀਨ, ਸੰਗਤ ਭੀ ਆਈ ਦੇਖ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਪ ਕੋ॥੪੯॥ Guru Ji did ishnaan in the river Raavi and told the Sikhs to remain patient; the Sangat flocked to the riverbank to have darshan of Guru Ji.
ਜਪੁਜੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਠ ਕਰ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਹੋਤ ਪਾਸ, ਰਾਵੀ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਗਏ ਹੈਂ ਬਿਰਾਜ ਜੀ। Guru Sahib Ji sat on the riverbank and recited Sri Jap Ji Sahib.* The rababis arrived and started doing Keertan as per the instruction of Guru Sahib.
*Note: Sri Gurpartap Suraj Granth states that Guru Ji first recited Jap Ji Sahib themselves, and afterwards also heard Jap Ji Sahib from the 5 Sikhs who were present with them.
ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੱਚਖੰਡ, ਦੇਵ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਇ ਵਾਜ ਜੀ। Guru Ji gave Shaheedi, their Joth(light) merged with the Supreme Joth, as Guru Ji went towards Sachkhand the cries of ‘Jai! Jai!’ (hail!) thundered in the skies.
Sant Ji in praise of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji writes:
ਧੰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਜੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾਤੇ, ਦੋਖੀ ਪਾਪੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਦੀਆ ਸਾਰ ਹੈ। Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji the giver of peace, love and divine knowledge, despite being tortured to unbearable lengths did not wish any ill upon their torturers.
ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਰਸ ਰਹੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਸਮ ਤੋਹਿ ਜਰੇ, ਤੇਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਨ ਹੂਆ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਹੈ। They remained imbued in Shaant Ras (state of peace), to Guru Ji pain and comfort were one and the same. Guru Ji- there is no one and will not be anyone like you in this creation!
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਜਹਾਜ ਗੁਰੂ ਗਰੰਥ ਜੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਏ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੈ ਕੀਰਤ ਅਪਾਰ ਹੈ। You created the ship of Naam in the form of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to ferry the drowning souls across the ocean of maya, the glory of Sri Harmandir Sahib is beyond explanation.
ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਹੈ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇਹੋ ਗੁਰੂ, ਅਜਰ ਜਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਚੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹੈ॥੫੩॥ O form of the True Creator Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who endured even that which can’t be endured, I bow again and again and ask for your blessed vision!
