In commemoration of the Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and also the Shaheedi Purab of countless Gursikhs who gave Shaheedi while defending Guru Sahib Ji's Pavithar Takhat, the following Sakhi from Gurbilas Patshahi 6 describes the construction of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib:
ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਨਿਜ ਸਾਥਿ। ਤਖਤ ਆਰੰਭ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ। Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the protector of the poor, taking Bhai Gurdas Ji and Baba Budha Ji along with them started the construction of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib (also known as Sri Akaal Bunga).
ਜਹ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਥੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਦਈ। ਤਹਾਂ ਅਰੰਭ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਈ॥੩੬॥ Guru Ji commenced the Seva of Sri Akaal Takhat at that spot where Akaal Purakh had instructed them.
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥ ਸੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਦਿਨ ਇਸਥਿਰੁ ਲੱਗਣ ਉੱਤਮ ਸਮਾ ਵਿਚਾਰਿ। On the day of Thursday, and at a very auspicious time it was deliberated (to start this Seva)
ਅਤਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਸੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਜੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੁਧਾਰ॥੩੭॥ With complete happiness and the playing of various instruments (i.e. Kirtan was sung in celebration).
ਕਰਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਤਹਾਂ ਪੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਵਰਤਾਇ। Before laying the foundation of Sri Akaal Takhat, Sri Guru Ji performed Ardaas to Akaal Purakh asking for aagia (permission) and Karaah Parshaad was distributed to all the Sangat.
ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਨੀਵ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਖੀ ਅਬਿਚਲ ਤਖਤ ਸੁਹਾਇ॥੩੮॥ After Ardaas, Guru Ji laid the first foundation stone of the Abichal Takhat (the eternal throne) themselves.
ਚੌਪਈ॥ ਕਿਸੀ ਰਾਜ ਨਹਿ ਹਾਥ ਲਗਾਯੋ। ਬੁੱਢੇ ਔ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਬਨਾਯੋ। No other craftsman was allowed to help in the construction, Baba Budha Ji and Bhai Gurdas Ji completed the construction of the Takhat in its entirety.
ਖਚਤ ਰੇਖਤਾ ਤਖਤ ਅਕਾਰ। ਬਨਾਯੋ ਕਛੁਕ ਊਚ ਨਿਰਧਾਰ॥੩੯॥ The shape of a raised platform (takhat - throne) was constructed with bricks and mortar. The Takhat was made of a certain height (Note: it is said that the Takhat was kept higher than the Takhat of the Mughals, to show that the Throne of Akaal was the highest sovereign).
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਦਿਖਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰਾ। ਪਾਇ ਸਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਬਨੇ ਅਪਾਰਾ। Seeing the completed Takhat platform, Guru Ji said, "In time a very grand building will be built here" (i.e. around the Takhat - become the upper stories of the Akaal Takhat Sahib).
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸ੍ਵਰਨ ਬੱਡੀ ਛਬਿ ਪਾਵੈ। ਦੇਖਿ ਨਾਕ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਲਜਾਵੈ॥੪੦॥ It will be embellished in gold and will look so beautiful that even the grand buildings in the heavens will be put to shame.
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਖਤ ਬਨਾਇਯੋ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਅਪਨੈ ਹਾਥ। In this manner Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji constructed the Throne of Akaal Purakh.
ਮਨਹੁ ਜਹਾਜ ਜਗੁ ਤਾਰਨ ਕੋ ਰਚਯੋ ਸੁ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ॥੪੧॥ The protector of the poor (Guru Ji) created a great ship to ferry the whole world across the ocean of Maya.
ਸਵੈਯਾ॥ ਦੇਸਨ ਦੇਸ ਨਿਦੇਸ ਸੁਨੀ ਗੁਰ, ਆਵਤ ਭੇ ਸਭਿ ਸੂਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ। Receiving Guru Ji's Hukamnamas (asking Sikhs to arrive with horses and weapons), countless warriors arrived at the court of Guru Sahib.
ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਔ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਲੀਏ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟ, ਸੁ ਚਾਹ ਭਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਰਾ। Bringing with them various Shastar (weapons) and horses to offer to Guru Sahib with much enthusiasm.
Bhai Bhagat Singh Ji then explains the first time Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji sat upon the timeless throne, Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib:
ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾਸ ਪੰਦ੍ਰਹ ਦਿਨ ਗੇ ਹਾੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ। ਦਸਮੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਉਦਾਰੁ ਮਹੂਰਤ ਗਾੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ। Bhagat Singh (the writer of Gurbilas, who heard this Katha from Bhai Mani Singh Ji) says: 10 days of the Month of Haarr had passed and the auspicious moment had arrived (for Guru Hargobind Sahib to ascend the timeless throne).
ਆਗਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਯੋ। ਹੋ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਧਾਰਿ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ, ਸੋ ਬਿਓਂਤ ਬਨਾਇਯੋ॥੪੫॥ Taking the permission of Vaheguru and with great happiness, Guru Ji put on beautiful clothes.
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥ ਦਰਸ ਹੇਤਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਆਇ ਤਬੈ ਸਮੁਹਾਇ। ਪੂਜਾ ਹਮ ਚਾੜ੍ਹੈਂ ਤਬੈ ਜਬ ਗੁਰ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸੁਹਾਇ॥੪੬॥ The Sangat had arrived in large numbers waiting for the Darshan of Guru Sahib. In their mind, they desired to offer the gifts they had brought once Guru Ji sat upon the Takhat.
ਸਵੈਯਾ॥ ਪੀਤ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਧਰੀ ਸੁਖਸਾਗਰ, ਔ ਕਲਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਸੀਸ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ। Guru Hargobind Ji, the ocean of peace put on a yellow robe, on their Dastaar was a very beautiful Kalgi (plume).
ਔ ਭੁਜ ਅੰਗਦ ਸੋਹਤ ਹੈਂ, ਪੁਨਿ ਪੀਠ ਪੈ ਚਰਮ ਧਰੀ ਛਬਿ ਪਾਵੈ। On their arms were beautiful arm guards, and the leather shield on Guru Sahib's back looked glorious.
ਦੋ ਅਸਿ ਲਾਇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਤਬੈ, ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਗਰ ਡਾਰ ਦੀਏ ਹਰਖਾਵੈ। Akaal Purakh then took two swords and placing them on Guru Ji with happiness said:
ਮੀਰ ਕੀ ਮੀਰ ਔਰ ਪੀਰ ਕੀ ਪੀਰ, ਸੁ ਦੋਊ ਧਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਅਲਾਵੈ॥੪੭॥ "I have appointed you as the King of all Kings and the Saint of all Saints." Note: (Giani Giaan Singh Ji in his 'Panth Parkash' says the Talwars were placed on Guru Sahib by Baba Budha Sahib Ji)
ਚੌਪਈ॥ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਭਿ ਤਨਿ ਧਾਰੇ। ਹਰਿਗੁਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਖਾਰੇ। In this manner, Guru Sahib was very pleased having placed the Shastar on his body.
ਤਖ਼ਤ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਈ। ਬੈਠੇ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ॥੪੮॥ Guru Ji bowed down to Sri Akal Takhat Sahib with devotion, and sat beside the Takhat (i.e. out of respect Guru Ji did not sit on top of the throne of Akaal Purakh).
ਭਗਵੰਤ ਕਹਾ ਯਾ ਪਰਿ ਪਗ ਧਾਰੋ। ਬੈਠਿ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਨਿਜ ਸਤ੍ਰੂ ਮਾਰੋ। Akaal Purakh said, "Sit upon the throne and destroy the tyrants!"
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਹਿ ਹਮ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਦਾਸ। ਹਮ ਕੋ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਨੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ॥੪੯॥ Guru Hargobind Ji said, "O Vaheguru, I am your servant, it only befits me to supplicate in front of you!"
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥ ਕਹਿ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਨਿਜ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੈ ਭੇਦ ਕਛੂ ਨਹਿ ਚੀਨ। Akaal Purakh said, "Do not recognise any difference between me and you"
ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਯਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਰਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਹਿ ਕੀਨ॥੫੦॥ "This Takhat has been named after Akaal (the Timeless One) and no one else" (i.e. Only Akaal Purakh and the Guru who is the form of Akaal Purakh can sit upon the Throne).
ਚੌਪਈ॥ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਦੇਹ ਰਹਾਵੋ। ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਤੁਮ ਯਾ ਪਰਿ ਛਬਿ ਪਾਵੋ। Akaal Purakh said, "As long as you are in bodily form, you should sit on the Throne in all your glory"
ਪਾਛੇ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਰੂਪ ਮਮ ਜਾਨੋ। ਮਮ ਪੂਜਾ ਇਹ ਠਾਂ ਠਾਨੋ॥੫੧॥ "Afterwards, recognise the Shastar (weapons) as my very form. To worship me place the Shastar on this Takhat".

Heeding the instructions of Akaal Purakh, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji ascended upon the throne of Akaal Purakh, to deliver justice and spread the path of righteousness. After Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji left their physical form, the Shastars of Guru Sahibs, Gursikhs and Shaheed Singhs adorn Akaal Purakh Ji's Takhat as their physical form to this very day.
